Barnes Looks Good for Title

Ricky Barnes takes a one shot lead in the final round of the US Open. The Open which is being played at Bethpage is one of the most prestigious any golfer can play in.

The third round was hit by un-expected rain however Barnes scored a 70 to stay on an admirable eight under par. Lucas Glover is not far behind on seven under.

England’s Rpss Fisher and David Duval both using quality golf clubs have both played exceptionally well to stay on three under.

Two unexpected players to struggle at the tournament were Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. Mickelson struggled mid round however finished to under whilst Tiger Woods was one over.

Ricky Barnes, 28 was ranked 519th in the world and playing his first full length year on the PGA tour.

The downpours on the Sunday delayed play by four and a half hours which Barnes used to his advantage with only 16 of the 60 strong field yet to play.

The American made history on his first year of the tour by holing a 30 foot eagle putt at the 4th. This meant that his is the fourth player to reach 11 under par at any stage in US Open history.

Barnes has equalled Jim Furyk’s score from 2003 and was one short of the record 12 under. This would have put him in the records with Tiger Woods and Gil Morgan.

Barnes who using specially manufacture golf equipment has not had the best of seasons by missing six of his twelve cuts this season. His best had been 47th last week at Memphis. Barnes had some tough competition following from behind by Mahan who emerged from the pack to join Weir and Glover.

“I would have liked to have shot a few more after I got to 11 over but I shot even par in the third round at the US Open. I can’t complain too much,” said Barnes.

Mickelson, meanwhile, ignited the partisan New York crowd with a strong finish that included four birdies in his last six holes.

“It was very fun to do it,” said Mickelson, who is in his last event before a break to be with wife Amy as she undergoes treatment for breast cancer in July.

“It was an up and down round. I made a couple of dumb shots but I hit a lot of great shots. There’s a lot of birdies out there. Its awesome. It’s such a great place.”

The final round will determine the best man and there a many players who are looking to make a come back.
